As of now, the hugely popular series has five installments, each of which laid the groundwork for the Game of Thrones TV show. A Dance with Dragons, the fifth and most recent book in the series, was published in and took Martin 6 years to write. With each of the novels consisting of , pages, it's no surprise that writing these novels is an epic battle of its own for the author.

Martin is currently writing The Winds of Winter, the sixth installment in the series, and has plans to write a seventh and final book, A Dream of Spring. With each novel taking so long to write, Game of Thrones quickly got ahead of Martin's source material. Martin shared his feelings about the series in an interview with PBS , explaining that while he had some creative input regarding the HBO series, he was caught off-guard when the show quickly passed his novels.

My biggest issue there was when they began the [TV] series, I had four books already in print, and the fifth one came out just as the series was starting in I had a five-book head-start, and these are gigantic books, as you know; I never thought they would catch up with me, but they did.
