In actuality, both art and science uncover understandings of the world in which we live, and explorations of nature and technology simultaneously support and deepen our relationships with the environment.

Children are innately predisposed to examining the world around them and making meaning through the use of materials. With the advancement of technology, we have access to a range of materials that present innumerable new possibilities. Join us as we examine the ways children engage in scientific exploration and our roles, as teachers, in connecting them with 21st-century materials that move engagement beyond passive consumption into active creation.

Influential to the experiences in the schools in Reggio Emilia has been the theory and practice of two American educators, David and Frances Hawkins. In , the educators from Boulder Journey School returned after 10 years and shared their inspired work in a virtual session called Beautiful Science, Creative Technology.

It was a magnificent property and, ok, a bit spooky! We laughed so much over the week and nourished our new friendships into cemented lifelong friendships and colleagues. Today was our last day with the Boulder Journey School teachers and children. In only a short time, we made some really authentic and warm connections with the teachers and children. All of us, felt the warmth in these connections and we are so excited about the possibilities that our new relationships will create, nourish and nurture.

Again, today we spent time in the classrooms and all of us were interested in and curious about the The atre Room.

We experienced children having the space, the right and permission to be noisy, loud, yell and run, squeal with delight…and observed teachers unfazed by this type of play. It was welcomed with delight and it was clear that children here are free to do what their bodies are telling them to do.

Nicole spoke to us about documentation and the daily blog. She spoke to us about document as both a noun and a verb, how am I as an educator a part of this expression, but also the documenter.

We talked about how documentation becomes curriculum through the lens of what is happening, what is my role and how do I turn this into curriculum. Alex spoke with us about deconstructing science and democracy: making meaning in a convoluted era. This was such an interesting project which had us all diving in to these two seemingly opposing ideas. They knew the rules and what was expected of them.

Ms Flannery would love to see a resident program arise in Guardian Australia as a result of the visit to Boulder, which would see early childhood teachers complete their masters degree, while contributing to the daily program of the centre. Ms Mardell said the visit reinforced for her the importance of environments being intentionally set, and created, in collaboration with children.

After a couple years of this practice, the rooms are almost perfected. Extending on the professional development theme, Ms Myskiw said she would love to see a summer conference where educators could submit an application, in relation to something taking place in their workplace, and present it to other colleagues.
